This is the book I'm currently reading for the Reading Challenge. Female spies often carried secret messages under their big hoop skirts and in their hair! Mary Elizabeth Bowser was a freed slave who worked at the Confederate White House. She was educated and had a good memory, so she was able to recite Confederate war plans to Union leaders. I also learned that before the Civil War, most nurses were men.

Greetings from Leavenworth Public Library
1/14/2010 We’re starting to thaw out here in Leavenworth. Last week we were snowed in-a good opportunity to sit by the fire and rack up a few pages for the Young Adult Reading Challenge. Currently, I’m re-reading A Year Down Yonder and A Long Way from Chicago by Peck. Since I moved to the Reference Dep’t. from Children’s, I haven’t really read much from those shelves! —a nice change.
